the project

Missing Presence is a project that talks about parental phubbing and how it affects young adults. The project includes a visual novel game and a website that explains the topic in a simple way.

In the game, players will experience different everyday situations where parents may focus on their phones instead of conversations. Players will make choices in the story, and those choices will affect what happens next.

This website provides more information about parental phubbing and why it matters. It also helps users think about their experiences and relationships at home by showing how phubbing can happen, as well as introductory information about phubbing in itself.

the problem

Today, phones are one of the biggest parts of our daily lives, especially considering the impact on Filipino families. Even though they help people stay connected, they can also cause problems in real life interactions. Many parents use their phones even during family time, which can make their children feel ignored. This behavior is now common and often goes unnoticed, but it can slowly affect communication, relationships, and emotional connection at home.

Phubbing is a combination of the words “phone” and “snubbing.” It means ignoring someone in front of you because you are focused on your phone. It is a specific type of technoference, which refers to technology interrupting real life interactions. But what is it truly about? How would this Phubbing Phenomenon affect the lives of young adults?
